HIGHLIGHT OF: 5 DAYS TOUR FROM FES TO THE DESERT AND MARRAKECH
DAY 1 : FES – IFRANE – AZROU – MIDELT – MERZOUGA
We met at the agreed-upon spot after that. We'll start our trip in the southeast, travelling through the Middle Atlas via Ifrane, Morocco's "Switzerland," and then on to Azrou, where we'll view and play with Barbary apes in the legendary cedar forest, Morocco's largest. On the way to Midelt for lunch, we continue south, passing through numerous cities and having the opportunity to view nomads living in tents. We'll continue our trek to the Atlas Mountains after lunch. The majority of the day will be spent passing through beautiful forests, springs, jagged rock walls, and Berber towns on your route to Errachidia, the desert's doorway. Then Erfoud arrives at the Merzouga Desert Hotel or Riad for a minty cup of tea and a chance to relax before the hour-and-a-half camel trek to see the sunset and sand boarding from the top of the next highest dune, dinner, and overnight in traditional Berber tents with drumming under a clear sky full of stars.
DAY 2 : MERZOUGA – ERG CHEBBI – OVERNIGHT IN BERBER TENT
After breakfast in the riad, you will continue your exploring of the area. You'll learn about the culture and music of the Gnawa people, who were originally transported from Sudan as slaves. Merzouga Lake is not far away, with its varied bird population. In the afternoon, you will mount your camel and be led across Merzouga's sand-sea by an expert camel man. Dinner will be provided in the berber tent, which will be your home for the night. For your convenience, the camp is equipped with western bathrooms.
DAY 3 : MERZOUGA – RISSANI – TODRA GORGES – PALM GROVES OF TINGHIR – DADES VALLEY
Your camel guide will wake you up early in the morning to view the most beautiful sunrise you've ever seen. After breakfast, you'll return to Merzouga village. Along the trip, don't miss the stunning Erg Chebbi sand dunes, which alter with the light as the day advances. After breakfast in your riad, we will visit the Markt in Rissani, a historic village that was the birthplace of Morocco's royal dynasty and the meeting point for caravans travelling as far as Timbuctou in Mali. Many hooded men and veiled women live in the Todra gorges, Morocco's tallest and narrowest gorges. After lunch in the valley, we'll drive into the Dades Valley, where you can see amazing sandcastles and strange rock formations known as "monkey toes." We'll spend the night in a nice hotel with a view of the Dades valley.
DAY 4 : DADES VALLEY – KASBAH AMRIDIL – PALM GROVES OF SKOURA – OUARZAZATE
After breakfast in the hotel, we'll drive through the Dades Valley to Kalaat Mgouna and Ouarzazate, or Asif N'dades in Tamazight (berber). The Way of the Thousand Kasbahs, which runs through Dades Valley, provides multiple opportunities to take some of the best images of your trip. We'll stop in Kalaat Mgouna, often known as "the Rose City," to get rosewater, which will keep your linens smelling fresh long after your trip is over. Continue on to Ouarzazate via the Amridil Kasbah, which is home to numerous Glaoui people and was once the seat of one of the last Berber chieftains in the 18th century. You will spend the night in Ouarzazate.
DAY 5 : OUARZAZATE – AIT BEN HADDOU KASBAH – TIZI N’TICHKA PASS – MARRAKECH
We depart from the riad after an early breakfast to visit Ait Ben Haddou's ksar (fortified settlement), where we will see the famous Kasbah (declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986). This spectacular stage has been used to film Gladiator, Obelix, The Mummy, The Jewel of the Nile, and Sahara with Penélope Cruz. We'll travel to Marrakech through the Tizi Ntichka pass after our visit to the kasbah. At 2.260 meters, this is the highest point in our country. We'll check into your riad within the Medina at the end of the afternoon, pausing to photograph the berber towns and taking in the beautiful views from the overlooks along the route. I'm spending the night in a riad.
